Octopus Tree Overview
Didierea madagascariensis is a deciduous, semi-succulent perennial in the Didiereaceae family. It is endemic to Madagascar and resides naturally in a spiny forest thicket environment. This ecosystem is unique to Madagascar and characterised by poor quality soil and erratic, low winter rainfall. Commonly known by the name octopus tree, this species is woody and classified as a shrub to small tree. It can grow over 10m in height and has spines arranged in whorls of 4, leaves are narrow, small and arranged in rosettes.
