Persimmon Overview
Large genus containing around 725 deciduous and evergreen shrub and trees originating from mainly tropical climates with a few species ranging into temperate locations. Some species in this genus are favoured for their wood, which is hard and weighty and commonly called ebony. Others are popular for their showy foliage, fruit and waxy, bell-shaped flowers, these are termed persimmon trees after their edible, orange fruits. This genus contains many species and cultivars used as ornamental garden plants.
