Large genus of around 270 species of annual, biennial and perennial shrubs, woody vines and herb plants distributed from Patagonia to Central Mexico. Foliage is attractive in shades of green and arrow shaped, they are mainly grown for the flowers. Orange, yellow or purple 2-lipped flowers are shaped like slippers and often patterned with spots in contrasting colours, making for a great visual display.
