Canna Lilies Overview
Canna is a genus containing 12 species of rhizomatous perennial plants found mainly in Asia and tropical North and South America. Grown widely for its large, attractive foliage and showy red, orange and yellow flowers, it is now a common garden and house plant. Although commonly referred to as Canna Lily, it is not a true lily. Originally it was a tropical plant but cultivation has resulted in plants that handle temperate conditions very well. So it may now be grown naturally in most countries if protected during cold winters and provided with ample sunlight. Cannas can be used as specimen plants in summer bedding, flower borders or in pots on patios and in conservatories. In frost-prone areas, they need a sheltered site and winter protection outside or bringing indoors.
