Smoketree Overview
The genus Cotinus contains around 8 species of hardy, deciduous trees and shrubs adapted from warm temperate climates in the Northern Hemisphere. They are grown for their foliage, which displays great autumn colour and their flowers, which are clustered and appear grey and fluffy like a smoke cloud. Hence this genus is commonly termed Smoketree or Smoke Bush. This genus is popular as ornamental garden shrubs and has been cultivated to produce pink flowers and dark purple-black foliage, making for a striking visual display.
