Frangula Overview

Frangula is a genus containing around 56 species of deciduous or evergreen shrubs and trees in the Rhamnaceae (buckthorn) family. They are native to Central America, the Southern US and across Eurasia and North Africa. These plants produce simple, ovate leaves and tiny flowers followed by black or red berries. They are cultivated for their flowers that attract pollinating insects and as hedging or natural landscaping specimens.
