Spleenwort Overview

Asplenium is a large genus containing around 716 species of fern, some of which are economically important, sold frequently as houseplants. They are evergreen or semi-evergreen, like moist, damp conditions and most grow best in low light conditions. The common name Bird's-Nest Fern is derived from the way in which the fronds overlap to form a nest, inside which organic matter is accumulated. Smaller species work well in small crevices, in rock gardens, or in alpine troughs, while larger species work well in woodlands or shady borders among shrubs.
