A genus of around 12 species of legumes native to Africa and the Americas where they are commonly found in semi-desert habitats. They include deciduous shrubs and trees with thorny crowns, finely divided pinnate leaves, green, photosynthetic twigs and branches and white or yellow flowers followed by a seed pod. Some species are cultivated by specialist nurseries and used in drought-tolerant and wildlife gardens in suitable climates.
