Duranta Overview
Contains almost 30 evergreen, thorny shrubs or trees, originally from the southern states of the USA, Mexico and South America. They are characterised by fast growth and typically favoured for their attractive bicoloured flowers, which are purple and white, followed by spherical orange berries. Due to its prolific nature, it is considered invasive and treated as a weed in Australia. Widely cultivated as an ornamental species in tropical and subtropical garden locations worldwide, this genus is now naturally found in a wide range of places including China, South Africa and some Pacific Islands. In temperate climates, Duranta is best grown under glass.
