Shield Ferns Overview

A genus of around 260 species of evergreen or semi-evergreen ferns in the Dryopteridaceae family with a wide distribution in both the New and Old Worlds and a centre of diversity in East Asia. They are found in warm-temperate and tropical, mountainous regions in rocky habitats. Several species are cultivated as garden plants, notable P. setiferum, and many cultivars have been developed. They are popular for their compact habit, pinnate fronds in a shuttlecock-like rosette. They prefer moist shade with some protection from excessive winter wet.
