Overview

A small genus of usually dioecious, evergreen and deciduous shrubs in the Helwingiaceae family native to the Himalayas, Eastern Asia and Northern Indochina with 4 recognised species. They are distinguished by their pairs of small, shiny leaves and tiny clusters of flowers that emerge directly from the centre of the leaf followed by red or black berries. Cultivated forms often have attractive yellow Autumn foliage.
