This lovely evergreen shrub can grow to 3m or more tall. It has leathery grey-green leaves to 10cm long. Profuse, poppy-like golden yellow flowers appear in early spring. These are about 8cm across and are lightly fragrant. The subspecies 'harfordii' can grow to a small tree, with a rounded crown to 6m high.
