Flowering Currant Overview
Ribes sanguineum is a deciduous shrub species in the Grossulariaceae family. Commonly known by the names Flowering Currant, Redflower Currant, or Red Flowering Currant, this species originates from western North America. It produces attractive, small, 5-petalled pink-red flowers in early spring, each flower measures between 0.5-1cm across. They are arranged on raceme structures up to 7cm in length, which can bear up to 30 flowers. Flowers lead onto dark purple, 1cm long berry fruits. Leaves are textured and lobed, they measure between 2-7cm in length and width. Typically grows to a height and spread of around 2m, the bark is coloured brown-grey and features raised brown pores, termed lenticels, these are an adaptation allowing gas exchange.
