Solanum pyracanthos is a spikey evergreen shrub from the family. Commonly known by the name Porcupine Tomato, this plant originates from Madagascar.
It may be grown as an ornamental plant, requiring warm conditions free from frost and full sun to partial shade. This plant should be used with care, it seeds profusely and seedlings can grow aggressively, producing thorns rapidly.
Leaves measure between 6-21cm in length, they are pinnately lobed and green in colour. This plant produces bright orange thorns along the stems and leaves.
Star-shaped flowers may appear any time of the year, they are arranged in clusters, coloured purple and lead onto rounded, marble-sized green-yellow, toxic fruits.
