SMALL SPACES made easy!
Are you feeling left behind by the “grow-your-own” revolution because you live in a gardenless apartment or have a postage-stamp-sized patio? Don’t worry: Anyone with a sunny windowsill, patio, or balcony can cultivate home-grown vegetables.
In fact, choosing plants that are nutritious, delicious, and attractive is the ultimate way to maximise limited space. We’ve tried and tested these varieties suitable for small spaces and know they’ll succeed, but that’s not to say there aren’t other vegetable seeds that you could try!
Growing Information:
Sow in pots or trays on a windowsill or in a greenhouse using a good quality compost. Cover seeds with 4cm (1½") compost. Germination 7-14 days. Grow on, planting outside or protecting with cloches until frost risk has passed, 20cm (8") between plants.Alternatively, sow direct into prepared, warm, moist soil at a depth of 5cm (2"), thinning as necessary to 20cm (8") between plants. Allow 60cm (24") between rows. Grows best in rich, well-prepared soil in a sunny position. Pick regularly and keep well-watered during dry weather. For dried beans – allow plants to dry out then lift and dry on surface if weather allows, or place in a dry greenhouse or garage to dry the pods. Shell beans and store in a cool, dry place until required. Sowing - Cropping: 9-14 weeks.
