Being juicy and sweet, Walla Walla is a 'non-tearing' variety which can be peeled without causing your eyes to stream. Originally taken from Corsica to the Walla Walla valley in the USA, this old variety has been selected for its sweetness, jumbo size and round shape. Harvest August-October. Height 30-40cm (12-16"). In the USA it is reputed to be so sweet that growers even eat them fresh like an apple! Perfect to eat fresh and add to salads and sandwiches as they don't have a hot aftertaste. Growing Information Sow thinly March/April into finely raked, firmed soil 13mm (½") deep in rows 30cm (12") apart. Germination 7-21 days. Thin seedlings to 10cm (4") between plants. Use thinnings as salad onions. Can also be sown late December-February 3 seeds per small pot in a propagator or greenhouse at approximately 15-20°C (60-68°F) eventually planting outside in well-prepared soil. Water freely during dry weather.
