This natural variant originates from the tropical rainforest floor of Southern America. It is commonly grown as a house plant for its attractively coloured and patterned foliage. Leaves are oval-shaped, dark olive green in colour, with a bright green central zone and attractive red venation and midribs. Delicate purple and white flowers are very short-lived, usually opening and closing within a day.
It has a clumping habit and is frost-tender, so keep it in places above freezing temperatures. Place in a position of indirect, partial sunlight and well-draining soil for optimal growth. Water when the soil has thoroughly dried out for best results. This plant has earned a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.

How do you care for a Maranta leuconeura?
Light: Place in bright, indirect light. Colours will fade in bright light, so best to avoid exposing those beautiful leaves to direct sunlight.
Water: Use tepid water (rainwater if possible) and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Remember to hold back on watering as often in winter.
Humidity: Mist the leaves, group with other plants (though Marant will hog the limelight), or sit on a pebble tray to maintain optimum humidity levels.
Repot once every two years, or keep an eye on the bottom of your pot. When you notice the roots poking out the bottom, it's time for a bigger pot.
