Heavenly Bamboo 'Gulf Stream' Overview

Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' is an evergreen, upright, bamboo-like, dwarf shrub. Its new growth appears purple-red in spring, maturing to green with a red flush. The leaflets then turn purple-red from autumn to winter. In summer, clusters of small white flowers are produced. In warm climates, orange-red fruits can follow on. Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' is also known by the common names Heavenly Bamboo and Sacred Bamboo. It likes a sheltered spot in full sun and tolerates most soils as long as they are moist and well-drained. It can be lightly pruned in spring or after flowering, to maintain shape. Lovely as a single specimen in borders, this compact, low maintenance plant is also good for growing in rock gardens, containers, and as low hedging or screening. Originally from Japan, India and China, Nandina Domestica can also be used to good effect in Japanese gardens, and 'Gulf Stream' is a great cultivar to include.
