Musa basjoo is an evergreen perennial that can grow to 5m tall. It has thick, ribbed leaves that can grow to 3m in length. This species can grow to over 5m tall and 2.5m wide and it readily produces suckers around the base. Flowers are cream-coloured and these appear in the summer, they hang in terminal spikes and may lead onto inedible green fruits measuring up to 6cm in length.
