Magnolia × loebneri 'Leonard Messel' Overview
Magnolia × loebneri 'Leonard Messel' is a deciduous shrub or tree cultivar, dependent on the form it takes, in the Magnoliaceae family. It grows vigorously to a medium size, producing oval foliage up to 12cm long. Showy flowers are produced in spring, these are coloured lilac-pink and fade to paler shades on the inside of the flowers. They are scented and measure approximately 10cm across, there are roughly 12 narrow petal-like structures termed tepals. Magnolia are interesting plants in that their flowers open before the leaves. This cultivar has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
