Echinops ritro is a herbaceous perennial species that grows to around 1m tall, with an upright, robust growth habit. It produces spiky, jaggedly-divided dark green foliage which resembles that of thistles, coloured white underneath. Flowers are thistly, spherical and coloured violet-blue, borne on branching, silvery-coloured, leafy stems.
