Austrian Clematis Overview
Clematis alpina is an attractive purple-flowering species also known by the name Austrian clematis. It resides in the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae and is termed a medium-sized climber. This plant is deciduous and thus loses its green foliage in the autumn and regrows new leaves in the spring. Foliage is divided into 9 narrowly-lance-shaped leaflets, these are arranged oppositely on stems. Flowers hang facing the ground, they are pale in colour, ranging from purple to light violet-blue. They have long tepal structures measuring up to 4cm in length, which surround creamy central parts. Flowers appear from mid-late spring and sometimes in midsummer.
