European Fan Palm Overview

Chamaerops humilis is an evergreen perennial palm species from the Arecaceae family of palms, it is the only plant in this genus and thus Chamaerops is termed monotypic. This attractive palm plant is known by multiple names, including the European Fan Palm, Dwarf Fan Palm and Mediterranean Dwarf Palm. It grows in a creeping fashion, usually no higher than 5m and spreads through underground rhizomes, it may be classified as a shrub or tree, dependent on the size it grows to and the stem arrangement. This species is half-hardy, it may be grown effectively in temperate conditions and it has been bred to produce different cultivar varieties. It forms several erect stems bearing large, rounded leaves which are deeply cut into linear segments, they measure approximately 45cm long. Small, brown-yellow, flowers are borne in panicles high up near the leaves, followed by small, date-like fruits. They are produced densely on short spikes amongst the leaf bases. This species has earnt a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. It has a bushy habit and can cope with temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius, plant in a sheltered position in well-draining soil.
