Overview

Bergenia crassifolia is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial from the Saxifragaceae family. Grown for the attractive blooms and large leaves, these are leathery in texture and rounded with deep veins. Also known as Heart-Leaf Bergenia and Elephants Ears, it is sometimes still referred to as Bergenia cordifolia, however these are now considered to be the same species. It grows to around 30cm tall and the leaves can develop an attractive purple tinge in the winter. Attractive white or pink flowers appear from spring, they grow on erect stems that reach 60cm in height. Flowers are arranged in bell-shaped clusters. This species is part of the Royal Horticultural Society “Plants for Pollinators” initiative to showcase plants which support pollinator populations by providing ample amounts of nectar and/ or pollen. A great choice for encouraging pollinating insect wildlife into your garden!
