Evergreen, slow growing, semi-succulent shrub species with a semi-prostrate to scrambling growth habit. Produces branches armed with dramatic thorns and small yellow flowers with large, showy red bracts. Bracts are modified leaves that surround and protect flowers, in this species these bracts strongly resemble flower petals.
