A genus of around 13 species of cormous flowering perennials in the Iris family, endemic to South Africa. Their leaves form a flattened fan-shaped tuft and the flowers are open funnel-shaped and in cultivated varieties come in a range of bright multi-colours hence their common name harlequin flower. They are tender and require protection from frost, and are often grown as glasshouse specimens.
