Typically grown for their attractive foliage, this genus consists of trees, shrubs or liana species with palmately divided foliage. Several species are commonly cultivated in pots as houseplants. Schefflera actinophylla (Umbrella Tree) and Schefflera arboricola (Dwarf Umbrella Tree) are most common. This genus can also be grown outdoors in areas with no frost or where protected against frost in sheltered positions. Many cultivars with attractive foliage variations including variegation and purple colouring have been developed.
