Opuntia monacantha is a succulent perennial cactus species from the Cactaceae family, originating from South America. This plant is a popular choice for growing as a houseplant, it is low maintenance, requiring good sunlight and infrequent watering. Produces showy flowers up to 10cm in length and between 3-7.5cm, they are borne on fleshy bases, appearing from the stem margins. They are yellow in colour, sometimes with red markings, particularly on the petal undersides. Flowers lead onto green fruits, which develop to a purple-red shade upon maturity. These succulent fruits measure between 4-7.5cm in length and they may be rounded or pear-shaped, with depressed tips and a covering of small britley tufts. The flesh of the fruits holds lots of smooth, pale brown, rounded seeds.
