A large genus of annuals, perennials, semi-evergreen and deciduous subshrubs, with characteristic heart-shaped leaves and bilaterally-symmetrical 5-petalled flowers. These are typically unscented and solitary, with a spurred lower petal, two lateral petals, and two upward-facing upper petals. There are many cultivars in the genus, with annuals and biennials bred for their multicoloured flowers often known as garden pansies, violas, or violettas. These are all good for container gardening and summer bedding.
