Heuchera Overview

Heuchera is a genus of evergreen or semi-evergreen perennial species from the Saxifragaceae family. Also known as Coral Flower, Coral Bell and Alum Root, they are native to North America. Commonly cultivated by gardeners around the world, they make excellent foliage plants, forming attractive clumps or mounds. They have attractive, palmately-lobed leaves that often have crinkled edges and pink-red or sometimes white, colourations. Heuchera flowers are slender sprays of tiny, tubular flowers, sometimes surrounded by colourful modified leaves, called bracts. These are borne on long stems and can be a coral pink colour, hence the names Coral Bell or Coral Flower. Also known as Alum Root, species in this genus have been extensively bred and hybridised to produce new varieties with a diverse range of leaf colours, patterns, and growth habits. Most prefer a shady spot, growing well in moist soil, but there are tougher cultivars that are suitable for a sunny position too. (If soil is continuously moist, full shade can be tolerated.) Heucheras are attractive to bees and make good cut flowers.
