Overview

A genus of around 170 accepted species of annuals or deciduous and evergreen perennials or shrubs in the Plumbaginaceae (plumbago or leadwort) family with a wide distribution on most continents, and a centre of diversity from the Canaries through the mediterranean to Central Asia. Commonly known as sea-lavenders, they thrive in coastal habitats and are tolerant of saline soils. Some species are popular in cultivation for their long-lasting calyces that give the plant the common name “everlasting flowers”.
