Fishbone Prayer Plant Overview

Ctenanthe burle-marxii is an evergreen perennial from the Marantaceae family, originating from Brazil. It is a popular houseplant choice. Commonly known as the Fishbone Prayer Plant, Never Never Plant or Prayer Plant, it has hairy, purple-tinged stems. The leaves are pale green above and deep purple beneath, they have oval-shaped, dark green fishbone markings and prominent main veins. Flowers are yellow-white but Ctenanthe burle-marxii is grown mainly for its lovely spreading foliage. It likes a position in bright but indirect sunlight that is warm and sheltered, and the soil needs to be kept moist - but not wet. Water when the surface of the soil has begun to dry out. Mist regularly and/or place the pot on a tray of dampened shingle. Feed with a weak solution of fertilizer every 2 weeks during the growing season. Keep the leaves free from dust by wiping with a damp cloth. Many cultivars have been developed from this species which is sometimes sold under the name Ctenanthe burle marxii ‘Amabilis’.
