Genus of evergreen shrubs and trees with 14 species. They resemble conifers and are cultivated for their foliage, which is reduced to needle-like scales arranged in whorls of between 5-20. Flowers are small and arranged in catkin-like structures. They are red, pink or orange-yellow and do not have petals. Fruits are also produced and these are woody and appear like conifer cones.
