Metasequoia is a small genus containing just 1 deciduous conifer tree in the Cupressaceae family. Native to China, this plant is known commonly by the name Dawn Redwood. It produces soft, needle-shaped leaves arranged in two flat ranks along the shoot. They are often pale in colour when young, turning green with age. This plant displays attractive autumn colouration, with the foliage turning shades of brown-pink and yellow. Flowers are non-showy and the cones are green upon emergence, developing to a brown shade with age.
