Snake palm Overview
The genus Amorphophallus contains almost 200 species of tuberous, herbaceous plants native to Asia, Africa, Australia and multiple oceanic islands. Some species are edible and they typically grow at low altitudes, in tropical and subtropical climates. Plants in this genus produce large, dramatic inflorescences encased in a colourful spathe, usually brown-purple or white-green in colour. Some species are pleasantly scented, but this genus is famous for containing the titan arum, also called the corpse flower. It is the largest unbranched inflorescence documented in the world, growing up to 2.5m tall and 1.5m wide and emitting a potent strong decaying flesh smell.
