Allagoptera Overview
Allagoptera is a genus containing around 6 small palm species in the Arecaceae family. This genus originates from South America and these plants are adapted to tropical and subtropical climates. These are some of the few palm species in which the trunk branches and some curve so the crown of the plant is below the base of the trunk. Their trunks are generally quite short and may be below the ground surface in some species. Foliage is pinnately divided into rows of strap-shaped leaflets, these are borne on long, slim stems up to 2m in length. The arrangement of leaflets on stems may be odd or even and leaflets generally have a fold down the centre, these leaflets grow in different directions, creating what is termed a plumose leaf with a more threedimensional overall appearance. These plants are termed monoecious as they have individual male and female flowers on the same plant. Flowers lead onto clusters of yellow-brown fruits which each contain a single seed. The flowers may be white, yellow, orange or creamy coloured.
