It is a large genus of around 350 species of herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennials that are organised further into various sub-generic groups. Members are characterised by a basal rosette of simple leaves and salver-shaped flowers on stout, erect stems. Primroses and cowslips are familiar wildflowers in this genus. Many Primula species have been cultivated and hybridised for 100’s of years leading to a plethora of available garden varieties.
