A genus of large deciduous trees in the Fagaceae family native to Europe, Asia and North America where they grow in temperate regions. Commonly known as beech, members of this genus of 11 species have smooth grey bark, large oval leaves and sharply three-angled nuts inside spiny husks. Cultivated species are grown for their Autumn colour and a number of cultivars with diverse growth habits and leaf colour are available.
