A large genus containing almost 200 species of succulent plants, evergreen or deciduous shrubs and trees in the Euphorbiaceae family native to both the New and the Old Worlds. They are cultivated for a number of purposes including the production of biodiesel, as animal feed, in the tanning and dyeing industries and as ornamentals. J. integerrima or spicy jatropha is grown for its continuously-blooming crimson flowers.
