This genus, originating from the Himalayas, East Asia and North America, comprises around 12 species of vigorous, deciduous climbing plants that use either tendrils or suckers to scramble upwards. They have palmate leaves and small flowers that are followed by black or blue berries. Several species, for example, P. quinquefolia or Virginia creeper, are grown as ornamentals for their stunning Autumn foliage and their ability to rapidly cover a wall or fence.
