Polka Dot Plant Overview

Hypoestes is a genus containing around 138 evergreen perennial plants, subshrubs and shrubs in the Acanthaceae family. Hypoestes plants are largely native to tropical and subtropical regions around the Indian Ocean. They are widely cultivated as houseplants due to their often attractively coloured and patterned foliage, with the most commonly grown being H. phyllostachya and its cultivars known as Polka Dot Plants. Small, twisted, tubular flowers are borne on terminal spikes from late summer to winter, but are rarely seen on houseplants in cool climes. To promote a bushy habit, it's recommended to pinch out the growing tips, these plants tend to do best when grown under glass in a sealed, high moisture environment.
