This genus, also known as pepper trees, contains around 31 evergreen trees and shrubs which produce nice foliage and are favoured as shade trees. Foliage is opposite and elliptic in shape. Flowers are small, star-shaped and coloured white-yellow, leading on to ornamental red fruits. Some species dried drupes are used to create pepper spices and others may be invasive in certain environments.
