A genus comprising roughly 10 species of deciduous subshrubs in the Lamiaceae (mint or dead-nettle) family native to Central and Southwestern Asia. They have an erect or spreading habit, grey-green deeply divided and aromatic foliage with tall spikes of small trumpet-shaped blue or mauve flowers. P. atriplicifolia, or Russian sage, is the most commonly cultivated species and it thrives in poor, well-drained soils in full sun.
