Gum Overview
Eucalyptus is a large genus with over 820 evergreen shrub and tree species with attractive bark, flowers and aromatic foliage. They are distributed mainly in Australia, with species also found across Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Melanesia. Flowers are petalless and consist of lots of coloured stamens, these may be red, white or yellow and give the overall appearance of being fluffy. This genus is widely cultivated for many reasons. Particularly for scientific research, horticulture and environmental protection schemes due to favourable traits possessed by species in this genus. Some of which include fast growth, production of oil with insecticidal properties and high water uptake. These plants generally grow to a large size but many cultivars have been bred, choose with care! Most species are hardy, but this is worth checking for any individual plant you're looking to grow. Plant in full sun and moist, well-draining soil for optimal growth.
