A monotypic genus in the Ginkgoaceae family comprising one species of non-flowering plant, G. biloba, found in the wild in China but cultivated worldwide. Known as a living fossil, all other species in this genus became extinct by the end of the Pliocene 2.58 million years ago.. G. biloba is a deciduous tree with fan-shaped 2-lobed leaves that turn yellow in Autumn. They are cultivated for their attractive foliage and tolerance of pollution.
