    Overview

Mesembryanthemum is a genus indigenous to Southern Africa that contains approximately 76 species. They reside in the Aizoaceae family and are commonly known as ice plants because of the glistening appearance of their fleshy stems, leaves and fruits. The Aizoaceae family is also known as vygies in South Africa and New Zealand. This genus commonly closes up their showy daisy-like flowers at night or when the conditions are not conducive to pollination by insects, for example when windy or frosty. This adaptation makes their flowers long-lasting and therefore popular with gardeners. Foliage is thick, succulent and finger-like in appearance.
