Shrimp Plant Overview

A large genus of evergreen perennials or shrubs in the Acanthaceae family. They are native to the Americas, India and Africa where they are found in warm temperate to tropical zones. There are more than 650 accepted species in the genus. They have simple leaves but are primarily cultivated for their inflorescences of showy, 2-lipped, tubular flowers, often with conspicuous bracts giving them the appearance of a bundle of shrimps. Commonly referred to as shrimp plant after its flowers.
