Bladder fern Overview
Genus with around 26 hardy, deciduous, rhizomatous perennials commonly referred to as bladderferns or fragile ferns. Species in this genus vary in their appearance and these differences may be accentuated in extreme environmental conditions. Foliage is attractive and possesses typical pinnate fern divisions with clusters of prominent sporangia, termed sori arranged on the undersides. Characteristic to this genus is the presence of a hooded bladder-like membrane covering the sori. They readily hybridise in nature, making individual species identification complex.
