Small genus with under 10 deciduous tree species also known as planes in England or sycamores in North America. They produce discrete flowers that lead on to groupings of spherical hanging fruit. They are mainly grown for their attractive peeling bark, palmately lobed leaves, which show nice autumn colour and their overall stature. Well adapted in urban areas, these are commonly found across cities as street trees or in parks and require a lot of space and so shouldn’t be planted near structures they could damage with their strong root growth.
