Switch Grass 'Squaw' Overview

Panicum virgatum 'Squaw' is a perennial cultivar that grows from rhizomes. These are plant stems which are modified to grow horizontally, typically under the soil surface. It has a clumping habit and produces tufts of mid green foliage. The foliage displays attractive autumn colouration, turning red purple in autumn. Non-showy flowers known as spikelets are borne from arching stems. The flowers are in arrangements known as panicles. These are branched stems whereby each individual flower has its own stalk, many grass species have flowers like this. Flowers nearer the base are older, new flowers are produced from the growing tip at the top. These appear early in autumn and are around 50cm in length, the spikelets are small and pinkish in colour. This cultivar is hardy down to -15 degrees Celsius, plant in a position of full sun, in moist, well-draining soil for optimal growth.
